Sharon’s Monthly News for February 2024

Good Morning and Happy Monday! Welcome to Sharon’s Monthly News.

One of my goals is to bring my two brands, Selma P. Verde, Author of Young Adult Fiction and Mentoring A Dream (MAD), Helping the adults reach the teens in their lives together and become a cohesive unit. Why? I believe that both brands provide tools for parents and caring adults to understand the issues teens are facing and then create a safe place to talk to their teens about those issues. As we move through 2024, you will see the brands working together more.

Interesting fact for this month – What is different about February this year?

As I prepare to write these updates each month, there is always some little tidbit that may catch my eye that I would like to share with you. And just like last month, this month’s interesting fact has to do with a calendar. This calendar is the one I received from Boystown, an organization I feature quite frequently. This year in February, we have twenty-nine days instead of the typical twenty-eight. Do you know why?

2024 Month of February

This year is a Leap Year!

What is a Leap Year?

According to, you probably already know that there are 365 days in a year, but if we’re being more precise it’s 365.2422 days. And during leap years, the calendar expands to 366 days in order to address the discrepancy that would accumulate to a loss of 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds each year! Thankfully, February 29 allows us to reclaim that lost time.

I used to work with someone who has a birthday on February 29th. I asked him how he celebrates on the years when there isn’t a February 29th and he said they would celebrate either on February 28th or March 1st.

What do you plan on doing with the extra day this year?

MAD and Selma Brand updates

So, for our monthly news posts, I will provide you with some updates on each brand and some thoughts that I have about the monthly theme we are presenting on Mentoring A Dream. MAD is the abbreviation that I use for Mentoring A Dream.

For 1Q2024, our theme is Teen Homelessness and Addiction. February is Black History Month, and we will talk about the theme of Black Resistance. The following list is the topics we are talking about on the blog this month

  • 2/12/2024 – What is Diversity and Inclusion? A great reminder of how to bring our communities together and the issue that was brought to the forefront by Black Resistance
  • 2/19/2024 – Inspirational Person – Jackie Robinson. He fought against a lot of resistance to be one of the first black professional baseball players.
  • 2/26/2024 – Our featured resource for this month is the YMCA. They not only provide many programs for teens and young adults, but they had many all-Black branches until desegregation took place.

Are you looking for any resources to gain a better understanding of the challenges your teen is facing? Be sure to check out the resources page on the MAD website.

On the writing side of the brand, Selma is working with her editor to get The Street’s Way ready to publish. She is continuing to work on the second round of edits that she just received from her editor.

Writing The Street’s Way has been the most challenging one of The Way Series. It isn’t so much the topic that makes it that way. There are many things that go into moving the series forward and writing a stand alone book. I want to develop the story line in the best way for the series to portray my message. Sometimes those things don’t come together for a deadline I set. They need to be intentional and take time.

Being a self-published author gives me a great amount of flexibility on deadlines. Sometimes, things don’t go as you think they are going to. Things happen that push you to rethink how fast something gets done. And sometimes you need to be flexible at how your journey will go. Sometimes the editing takes longer because it is what is needed to make the book the best it can be. Always remember, things will get done, it just may not happen the way you image it or want it to go.

Novels with culturally diverse characters – The Way Series

Are you looking for a couple of coming-of-age reads for you or your teen about challenges they face? One great series which fits the bill in The Way Series. It is the series I have written under my pen name, Selma P. Verde.

The Way Series

Book #1The Hard Way – is the story of Paul Jones and his starting his freshman year of high school and how he must navigate dealing with pressure from his peers to do things to fit in.

Book #2Shawn’s Way – although it is a continuation of Paul’s journey from The Hard Way, we meet freshman, Shawn Townson. He becomes the target of a bully when an upperclassman decides to take out his frustration on him.

Book #3The Street’s Way – is a continuation of The Way Series which introduces Mikala Kalani to the storyline as a runaway and homeless teen. Coming your way in early 2024.

So, click on link below to my books page to learn more about the series! And, pick up your copies before the release of The Street’s Way.
