Stories about Addiction – Clean by Amy Reed

One of the ways to learn about a teen challenge is to read a book about it. This week I want to talk about a book I read about addiction named Clean by Amy Reed. It is a young adult novel that takes us into the world of a treatment center and tells us about the teens who are there. Each one has an unique addiction experience.

When I was looking for a book to read that would be about stories of addiction, I wanted the book to be relatable to teens, but also a good read for adults. A young adult novel seemed to be the best format. It gives us a read from teens perspective and that point of view can help us adults to see the issue of addiction through their eyes.

Author Background

Amy Reed was born in the Seattle area and attended many different schools growing up. This made her restless and helped her imagination run wild. After going to film school and deciding that it wasn’t her thing, she returned to her love of writing, earned her Masters in Fine Arts and put her imagination to work to write novels. Clean is her second book and is based on her own rehab experience at sixteen.

Summary of the book

According to Amy Reed’s website, Olivia, Kelly, Christopher, Jason, and Eva have one thing in common: They’re addicts. Addicts who have hit rock bottom and been stuck together in rehab to face their problems, face sobriety, and face themselves. Each character brings their own personality and story to the table which gives the reader at least one character they can probably relate to.

Reaction to the book

I really enjoyed this book. I like that it told the stories of multiple teens with multiple addiction issues. It shows us that every addiction journey is as unique as the person who is working to get sober. It is a lighter read and not dragged down with statistics. The characters and story are engaging, so it would be a great read to suggest to your teen to give them some insight into addiction and recovery from addiction from a teen’s perspective.

I recommend this book for young adults and adults alike.
